The very first thing that I’ve ever made when I started my crochet journey was an amigurumi giraffe. I ran into my local yarn store, not knowing what yarn or crochet hook should I buy. I didn’t do my research at all.

I just choose a Youtube video, bought the yarn that was soft and in the color I liked, and a crochet hook that was, in my opinion, the right one for my project. So many red flags, but to me, everything seemed fine until I started crocheting. After that, everything went downhill.

The yarn was too thick, the crochet hook was way too big for any amigurumi toy and I had no idea how to crochet.

But you have to start somewhere. The easiest way for me would be to start with something simple, to learn basic crochet stitches, understand abbreviations, how to decrease, work in front or back loops only. No, all I wanted was a perfect amigurumi toy made by the end of the day.

I was so naive. But at the same time very stubborn, convinced I will learn how to do it, and not willing to give up at any price. I finished my giraffe a few days later. And I have to say, it looked really bad.

Like a little monster, that no child would like to have in their toy collection. Ha haha. But, thanks to thins project, I’ve learned so much about yarn, crochet hooks, amigurumi toys, and how to crochet. I will never forget my first crochet love, amigurumi toys.

The pattern for this crochet amigurumi snail was waiting on my shelf where I keep my written patterns ready to be published online for more than a year now.

The pattern is very simple, using two simple stitches: single crochet (SC) and single crochet two together stitch (SC2TOG). And it’s made of three steps: body, shell, and tentacles.

The instructions are written in a few simple steps:

  • body
  • shell and
  • tentacles.

Please, read the instructions carefully. Don’t skip any parts of the pattern and make sure you are not accidentally losing or adding additional stitches to the pattern. That might affect the final look of your design.

BODY

Take your DK weight yarn in beige color and create a magic ring (VIDEO here!). Work in rounds and at the end of each round DO NOT join.

Round 1 With a 3.0 mm crochet hook make 6 sc sts into the middle of the magic ring. = 6 sts.

Round 2 Work 2 sc into next 6 sts. = 12 sts.

Round 3 Work { 2 sc into next st, 1 sc into next one} 6 times. = 18 sts.

Round 4 Work { 2 sc into next st, 1 sc into next two} 6 times. = 24 sts.

Take some stuffing and fill the head.

Round 5 – 9 Work 1 sc into next 24 sts. = 24 sts.

Round 10 Work {1 sc into next two, sc2tog} 6 times. = 18 sts.

Round 11 Work {1 sc into next one, sc2tog} 6 times. = 12 sts.

Round 12 – 29 Work 1 sc into next 12 sts. = 12 sts.

Round 30 Work sc2tog 6 times.

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Take a yarn needle and join all the sts that left and sew hide the hole.

SNAIL SHELL

Take some DK weight green yarn and create a magic ring.

Work into back loops only and DO NOT join after each round.

Round 1 Work 1 sc into the magic ring. = 6 sts.

Round 2 Work 2 sc into next 6 sts. = 12 sts.

Round 3 Work { 2 sc into next st, 1 sc into next one} 6 times. = 18 sts.

Round 4 Work { 2 sc into next st, 1 sc into next two} 6 times. = 24 sts.

Round 5 Work 1 sc into next 24 sts. = 24 sts.

Round 6 Work { 2 sc into next st, 1 sc into next three} 6 times. = 30 sts.

Round 7 – 8 Work 1 sc into next 30 sts. = 30 sts.

Round 9 Work {1 sc into next three, sc2tog} 6 times. = 24 sts.

Round 10 Work 1 sc into next 24 sts. = 24 sts.

Round 11 Work {1 sc into next two, sc2tog} 6 times. = 18 sts.

Round 12 Work {1 sc into next one, sc2tog} 6 times. = 12 sts.

Round 13 Work sc2tog 6 times. = 6 sts.

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Take a yarn needle and join all the sts that left and sew hide the hole.

SNAIL TENTACLES

Take a small amount of beige yarn and a yarn needle. Insert the needle on one side of the head and come out on the other. Pull the yarn half through, cut the yarn on both sides. Make a knot on each end. And you’ve created snail’s tentacles.

And your project is complete! 🙂
