Sunflower Crochet Baby Bonnet – Free Pattern

by Doroteja

This is a crochet pattern for my easy beginner-friendly baby bonnet – Sunflower. Find out what inspired me to design this pattern, what yarn did I choose, and learn all the tricks on how to create a perfect baby bonnet.

You can find the free instruction below. If you want to support my work or need more sizes, purchase the ad-free, printable PDF here.

Little crochet baby clothes are so cute and so much fun to make. I think no one can argue with that. And they can be made from start to finish in a day or two, which is super fast if you compare it with a sweater or even very delicate lace shawl which can take you weeks to finish.

You can find a bunch of patterns for baby shoes and rompers on my blog and Etsy store, but not so many designs for crochet baby hats, beanies and bonnets. The very first baby hat that I’ve ever posted was a pattern for crochet baby beanie with a big pom-pom on the top. You can find the pattern here.

But that was a while back and I think now is the right time to make another one. This time we will be making a baby bonnet, with a simple double crochet stitch on the back and an interesting crochet stitch pattern around the main part made in rows.

  • YARN: For this pattern, I was using 100% cotton yarn in DK weight.  I’ve made this bonnet in purple and pink, but you can choose any color you like. (HERE!)
  • CROCHET HOOK: I was using a 4.0 mm or G/6 aluminum crochet hook with a simple plastic handle. (HERE!)
  • OTHER: And of course a yarn needle (HERE!), stitch markers (HERE!), and a pair of scissors (HERE!).

Gauge

GAUGE:  Work 10 sts and 4.5 rows in DC measure 5 x 5 cm or (2 x 2 inches).

When you find a new crochet project that you would like to make, you usually want to start ASP. We all do. But please take some time and check the gauge. It might save your project!

Checking the gauge is a crucial step in the process of making a new crochet/knit garment. It will help you achieve the right size of your finish item. Learn how to check your gauge here.

  • st/sts – stitch/stitches
  • ch – chain (VIDEO)

Instructions

Crochet Baby Bonnet – Sunflower

The instructions are written in two simple steps:

  • bonnet and
  • straps.

Please, read the instructions carefully. Don’t skip any parts of the pattern and make sure you are not accidentally losing or adding additional stitches to the pattern. That might affect the final look of your design.

BONNET

Create a magic ring. Work in rounds. At the end of each round ss into the first st of the round and join the round. Joining ss does not count as a stitch in the pattern! The chain at the beginning of the round/row does not count as a first stitch of the round/row. Do not turn after each round.

Round 1: Ch 2. Work 10 dc sts into the magic ring. Ss. = 10 sts.

Round 2: Ch 2. Work 2 dc into each of the next 10 sts. Ss. = 20 sts.

Round 3: Ch 2. Repeat (work 2 dc into the first, 1 dc into the next one) 10 times. Ss. = 30 sts.

Round 4: Ch 2. Repeat (work 2 dc into the first, 1 dc into each of next 2 sts) 10 times. Ss. = 40 sts.

Round 5: Ch 2. Repeat (work 2 dc into the first, 1 dc into each of next 3 sts) 10 times. Ss. = 50 sts.

From now on, work in rows. After each row turn.

Row 6: Ch 2. Work 1 dc into each of the next 50 sts. Turn. = 50 sts.

Row 7: Ch 1. Hdc 1. Repeat (Skip 2. Start in the 3rd. Work 2 dc, ch 3 and ss into the same st.) 16 times. Work 1 hdc into the last one. Turn. = 50 sts.

** A combination of sts ch 3 and ss, in the pattern count as one stitch!**

Row 8: Ch 1. Hdc 1. Repeat (Work 2 dc around the ch-3 from the previous round. Ch 3. Ss into the ch from the previous round, on the top, right next to the dc st.) 16 times. Hdc 1. Turn. = 50 sts.

** If it’s easier for you, you can make the ss around the ch (as you did with 2 dc). **

Repeat row 8 six more times.

Fasten off and cut the yarn. Weave in all the ends.

STRAPS

Take e a small amount of yarn and ch 42. Attach the chain to the main part with sc sts. Work sc evenly around the neck area, approximately 1 and a half st per row. Chain 43. Turn. Start in the 2nd ch from the hook. Work 1 sc into each stitch all the way to the other side of the strap. Fasten off, cut the yarn and hide all the tails with the help of a smaller crochet hook or a yarn needle.

Hi! Beautiful pattern thank you! For some reason no matter what I do, the tip of the hat is very pointy where the magic circle is. Unsure of where I’ve gone wrong? Not sure if it’s bexause I’ve used yarn that is part acrylic. Any thoughts?

Hmmm…hard to say. The first thing that comes to my mind is, try to make the first round, so sts into the magic ring not too tight. 🙂 Hope it helps! 🙂

Hi for newborn size, what would you recommend. One less round of decrease or just remove a few rows?

Doroteja July 3, 2018 - 00:40

Hi Natalie! Try with one size smaller crochet hook. 🙂 The whole bonnet will come out smaller. 🙂

Hi, I absolutely love this pattern. I’m wanting to make it in a merino wool, is there any that you would recommend? Thanks.

I’ve been searching fiercely for a crochet bonnet pattern for size 6 months plus. Should I just add a few more rows?

Reply
Doroteja October 14, 2018 - 22:54

And rows. 😊 Good luck! 😊

This looks so pretty, I’m going to try it. I haven’t crocheted in 3 years! Let’s see if I remember.
I have a 3.75 hook and a 4.25. Which would you recommend I use?

I love this, but I was wondering did you join after each round. Sorry if this is an obvious answer, I’m new to crochet 🙂

Reply
Doroteja November 2, 2018 - 16:47

Hi Dani! I was joining after each round and I was turning my work after each row. Check the video tutorial, it will help you understand the pattern better. 🙂 Good luck! 🙂

I loved your video, I am now helping to make baby bonnets to go with gowns for preemie, and the stillborn etc in the hospital. The bonnets are a new request. They are used for cranial and or facial deformities. I want the bonnets to be very pretty and not rushed or too plain. I think this will make a beautiful one and I might be able to get at least one done a night. I so appreciate the video to get started and know they are being done correctly. Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial.

How much yarn will I need? If I follow your link for the yarn, will one skein make one bonnet?

Reply
Doroteja November 29, 2018 - 11:51

Yes. I finised one skein. 🙂

So beautiful! My first time crocheting & the video was so helpful!
Just wondering – the stitches in row 8, is there a name for that particular stitch? Would like to find some more patterns online with the same stitch – it’s beautiful

Doroteja March 25, 2019 - 12:55

Hi Gabrielle! I am so sorry but I could not find the name of the stitch pattern. I found a stitch very similar to this one in one of my books, it’s called Cross Hatch stitch. The only difference between the Cross Hatch stitch pattern and mine is in attaching stitch, the one that anchors the dc sts to the fabric. I use slip stitch and Cross Hatch stitch pattern uses sc st. I hope this helps! 🙂 Good Luck!

Hello! Would one ball of yarn be enough for 1 beanie? Thank you! I’m excited to make this for my baby girl 💕

Reply
Doroteja June 27, 2019 - 14:30

Hi Michele! It depends on what yarn you are planning to use and how much yarn is in one ball. 🙂
