Crochet Baby Booties by Croby Patterns

I love quick and fun crochet projects made with a thick yarn in pastel colors. For this one, I was using a Bulky weight yarn in blue and beige. It’s very soft and warm. Perfect for the cold winter days.

Because I wanted to achieve nice and tight, but not too tight stitches, I used a smaller crochet hook than recommended on the yarn label. Instead of 7 or 8 mm, 6 mm was my perfect match.

This is from the future Doroteja, but I just wanted to let you know, that I’ve designed one more pattern in Winter Snowflake collection that I think you should try, plus two additional patterns that would go perfectly with the Winter Snowflake baby shoes.

Materials

YARN: Bulky weight yarn. I was using Grundl Shetland 80% Acrylic and 20% wool yarn in beige and blue color. You will need maybe one-third of each skein/each color.

CROCHET HOOK: 6.0 mm crochet hook or hook to obtain the gauge.

My favorite is Clover Crochet hook. You can find it here.

YOU WILL ALSO NEED: 2 stitch markers, tapestry needle and a pair of scissors.

Gauge

GAUGE:  Work 12 sts and 20 rows in SC using 6.0 mm crochet hook and Bulky weight yarn measure 10 x 10 cm (5 x 5 inches).

When you find a new crochet project that you would like to make, you usually want to start ASAP. We all do. But please take some time and check the gauge. It might save your project!

Checking the gauge is a crucial step in the process of making a new crochet/knit garment. It will help you achieve the right size of your finish item. Learn how to check your gauge here.

Stitches and Abbreviations

  • St/Sts – stitch/stitches
  • Ch – chain
  • Ss – slip stitch
  • Sc – single crochet
  • Hdc – half double crochet
  • Dc – double crochet
  • Hdc2tog – hdc 2 stitches together
  • Dc2tog – dc 2 stitches together
  • Dc3tog – dc 3 stitches together

Pattern Notes

  • The pattern is made with very thick yarn. That gives the shoes that extra comfort.
  • You can make the whole project bigger or smaller by using a smaller or bigger crochet hook and/or smaller or bigger yarn weight.
  • Since this is a project made with wool, I don’t recommend using it on naked skin. use comfortable socks first and put the shoes on top.
  • Those baby booties are soft and warm, perfect for wintertime.
  • The fit should be comfortable. Not to tight and also, not too loose.
  • The shoes have a cord tied in a bow around the ankles. That prevents shoes from falling down and losing them.
  • This crochet pattern is available in 3 sizes. The smallest one is available here on my blog, you can find it below, and the other two, slightly bigger, are available in my pattern shops. If you purchase a PDF pattern, you get all 3 of them in one.
  • The skill level needed for this pattern is Easy/Medium. You can read more about skill levels here.
  • How to read a pattern: You can learn how to read a crochet pattern here.
  • The pattern is written in US crochet terms.
  • If you have any questions, leave them down below. I will be more than happy to help.

Instructions

Crochet Baby Booties Pattern – Winter Snowflake

The instructions are written in a few simple steps:

  • sole
  • upper part and
  • strap.

Please, read the instructions carefully. Don’t skip any parts of the pattern and make sure you are not accidentally losing or adding additional stitches to the pattern. That might affect the final look of your design.

1. CROCHET SOLE

Take the Bulky weight yarn in beige color and 6.0 mm crochet hook and create a foundation chain made of 6 chains.

Work in rounds. At the end of each round, join the round with a slip stitch (ss).

Round 1: Start in the 2nd chain from the hook. Make 2 hdc into the same chain. Hdc 3. Make 6 hdc into the last chain from the hook. Now continue on the opposite side of the foundation chain. Hdc 3. Make 2 hdc into the last one. Ss. = 16 sts.

Round 2: Ch 1. Start in the first. Make 2 hdc into each of the next 2. Hdc 3. Work 2 hdc into each of the next 6 sts. Hdc 3. Work 2 hdc into each of the last 2 sts. Ss. = 26 sts.

Cut the yarn and fasten off. Hide the yarn tail between the stitches.

2. UPPER PART

Take the Bulky weight yarn in blue color and 6.0 mm crochet hook and attach the yarn to the center of the heel with ch 1.

Fold the sole lengthwise and find the stitch on the heel right in the fold. This is the stitch you need.

Make sure you are attaching the yarn to the wrong side of the shoe. Right side should be facing down.

Work in rounds. At the end of each round, join the round with a slip stitch. Start every round in the first st of the round.

Work you first round on the upper part of the shoe into back loos only.

Do not turn after each round!

Round 1: Start in the first. Work 1 hdc into each of the next 26 sts. Ss. = 26 sts.

Round 2: Ch 1. Sc 7. Hdc 1. Hdc2tog. Repeat dc2tog three times. Hdc2tog. hdc 1. Sc 7. Ss. = 21 sts.

Rounds 3: Ch 1. Sc 7. Hdc2tog. Dc3tog. Hdc2tog. Sc 7. Ss. = 17 sts.

Round 4: Ch 1. Work 1 sc into each of the next 17 sts. Ss. = 17 sts.

Round 5: Ch 1. Work 1 hdc into each of the next 17 sts. Ss. = 17 sts.

Round 6: Ch 1. Work 1 dc into each of the next 17 sts. Ss. = 17 sts.

Cut the yarn and fasten off. Hide the yarn tail between the stitches.

Take a stitch marker and mark the most front center stitch in round 5.

3. CORD

Take the Bulky weight yarn in beige color and 6.0 mm crochet hook and crochet a chain made of 50 chains.

Create a small knot on both ends of the chain.

Trim the ends.

You can always make the cord shorter by creating the knots a few chains in on both sides of the chain.

You can also do that once the cord is already placed inside the shoe.

Starting from the front (stitch marker), weave the cord through the stitches of round 5. Tie a bow.

Hide the yarn tails between the stitches. Repeat the steps for the second shoe.

Hi Doroteja!
Love you winter bootie pattern!
How can I make the tops high enough to fold over? Maybe single or DC a few rounds ?
Thank you!

I can knit anything using written instructions but I have never tried crochet using written instructions – only thru pattern diagrams mainly tablecloth, doilies, bags and one simple cardigan ages ago.

I’m so excited to discover your site – esp this video. Now the written instructions make sense to me ?. Can you direct me to a page where the crochet instructions can be downloaded?

Now I have projects to crochet so that I can exercise my arthritis fingers – tq

Hi! I am so happy to hear that. πŸ™‚
There are two kinds of patterns available on my site. I call them free and premium crochet patterns. Premium crochet patterns are available as PDF patterns only, but filled with a lot of pictures that can be very helpful during your creative process. You can find them in my Etsy, Crafts, Ravelry and Love Crochet Store (4.99$).
The next ones are free crochet patterns, patterns that can be found, in one size only, for free with ads, as written patterns here on my blog and video tutorials on my YouTube channel. They are also available as an ad-free, beautifully formatted and print-friendly PDFs that include additional sizes in my Etsy shop (2.99$)
I hope this was helpful for you. πŸ™‚

I understand what sl is. Slip stitch. What is ss?

Reply
Doroteja July 3, 2017 - 12:24

Ss is in my crochet patterns abbreviation for slip stitch. πŸ™‚

I want to make tis using regular weight yarn not bulky. How and/or what do I adjust to do this.

Reply
Doroteja September 27, 2017 - 12:52

Hi Janice!
This pattern is created with very thick yarn. If you would like to use a bit thinner yarn I would recommend you use a pattern for Minion Inspired baby Booties just without the eye. You can use any colors you like or use beige for the sole and blue for the upper part. Than chain around 50 and attach the strap made of chains the same as you would if you would follow the tutorial for the Fluffy Like a Snowflake Booties. πŸ™‚

I’ve a question about round 1. In the written pattern you say ‘work in sc into next 26 sts’. But in the video you work with hdc stich. Why the difference?
And another question ;). Do I have to turn the sole around, before start the upper? So that the wire is in the insite of the bootie.
You make very nice things!

Reply
Doroteja November 29, 2017 - 11:37

Hi Marjan!
You are right, the stitch used in the first round of the upper part is hdc and not sc. I’ve already changed it in the pattern. πŸ™‚
As for the sole… just make sure the nicer side of the sole stays on the outer side of the booties. πŸ™‚

how many chain should be crocheted for 1 yr baby

Reply

I would probably start with at least 3 additional chains in the sole. πŸ™‚

Hi. I love your pattern, but am looking for 12-18 months sizing and can’t find anything I like except yours. I will happily buy the pattern on Etsy but am looking for instructions on making them bigger. I am brand new to crocheting and want to make these for my daughter who is almost one.

Hi Kristi! Most of my patterns are available in sizes up to one year only. I recently published my first pattern available in larger sizes and it’s for a beutiful baby dress. You can find it in my Etsy and Ravelry shop. It’s called Little Ladybug. 😊 It’s beige and old pink color. 😊 Happy crocheting! ❀️

The pattern is for 0 – 6 months. But you can use a slightly larger hook to make it bigger. πŸ™‚

I am going to be a Brianna for the first time and want to make these adorable booties. However, in round 2 you have Hdc2tog and Dc2tog. I have tried placing 2 Hdc per stich and then 2 Dc per stitch as directed but this doesn’t work out. I end up with a lot more than 7 stitches for the ending sc.
what am I missing here??
And yes, I am starting the round with 26 stitches.
I have been crocheting for many years and this is just not working for me.
Please help!!

Doroteja May 6, 2019 - 11:35

Hi Laura
Hdc2tog and dc2tog means you have to join two stitches into one stitch – it’s a decrease, not an increase in the pattern. Good Luck!:)

Are ss and chain 1 the same thing? Mine did not come out right!

Also wondering if I have to turn after each round? Thanks!

Reply
Doroteja June 27, 2019 - 14:23

Hi Traci! No, ss and ch are not the same thing. πŸ™‚ Ss is a slip stitch – usually made into the very first stitch of the round to join the round and the ch is a chain – the one at the beginning of the row or round is called turning chain and is there to lift the row to a proper height. πŸ™‚

Hi, Doroteja! I was just wondering how to make these bigger? I don’t have a bigger hook and my newborn nephew is just a bit big for the size that comes out of the pattern, unfortunately. I ended up making 6 pairs of them, though! Easy to follow and I’ve been crocheting for about a month!

Reply
Doroteja February 4, 2020 - 14:39

Hi Caitlynn! Sorry for my late response. Add a chain or two into your foundation chain. That will make the sole longer. πŸ™‚ Just remember, the additional chain will give you a simple basic stitch later, no increases, no decreases. It will be a part of the hdc 3 sts set made into each side of the chain. So if you add one chain to your foundation chain work hdc 4 into each side of the chain. Happy crocheting! πŸ˜€
